The Town of Sherman, incorporated October 1802, was named after the eighteenth-century shoemaker Roger Sherman. Roger Sherman's claim to fame is that he was the only founding father to put his signature on all four of the new nation's most significant documents: The Continental Association of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and The Federal Constitution.
Nestled 15 miles north of Danbury, it is a rural community of 23.4 square miles and is the northern most town in Fairfield County - located in the Housatonic Valley at the northern end of Candlewood Lake. State Routes 39, 37, and Route 55 access Sherman. The town has seen an increase in growth especially in the last 10 years. The population is much enlarged in summer as vacationers arrive to take advantage of the town's open spaces, beaches, and seasonal homes around Candlewood Lake.
Sherman's rural lifestyle is not endangered. Its residents like the town just the way it is, and are determined to control growth and land use.
