Named by Gov. Robert Treat after a town in his native Essex, England, Danbury has been a hub for neighboring towns from its beginnings. A military supply depot during the Revolutionary War, the town developed into a center for the distribution and production of various goods. Some of those products that were produced include optical equipment, ball bearings, pharmaceuticals, and machinery. Danbury was at one time known for its hat industry, which lasted from 1780s through the mid 1950s.
During the Revolutionary War, Danbury served as a weapons cache and supply point for the Continental Army. Recognizing this, in 1777 the British, under the command of General Tyron, raided Danbury – burning and looting the town in the process. For many years following this, Danbury continued to exist as mostly an agrarian community.
Today Danbury offers a superb quality of life, highlighted by the scenic New England landscape, outstanding educational and recreational facilities, cultural amenities, excellent health care facilities and a vibrant local economy.
