Bethel is the oldest of the Housatonic Valley's nine towns. The early history of the town is incomplete since it was a part of Danbury until 1855 – and the British burned the city’s records in April 1777 during the Revolutionary War. The exact time of the first settlement of Bethel is unknown but settlers probably moved into the area around 1700 or earlier.
Although the old hat, comb, and shoemaking factories are long gone, manufacturing still maintains a presence in the town, along with other businesses. Many companies are concentrated in two major sites, the Francis J. Clarke Industrial Park, and the Berkshire Industrial Park on Route 6.
An attractive suburban town, Bethel also has many retail shops. Some of the most inviting are located in its busy downtown section, along Greenwood Avenue and adjacent streets.
